What is a Video Switcher?
A video switcher (or known as a video mixer, vision mixer, and camera switcher) is a hardware device or software program used to switch between multiple incoming audio or video signals from various sources such as cameras, video playback, PowerPoint feeds, etc. These video switchers then direct one of those signals to a single output, including a streaming device, video recorder, or a display device.
Video Switcher Functionality
The main functionality of a video switcher is to create a master output for real-time events or recordings. Video Switchers can create different visual effects, ranging from simple mixes and wipes to elaborate effects, such as keying operations which help with picture in picture effects. They additionally make use of multiple input sources, then apply the desired effects and produce one or more outputs for your event.
Most video switchers are based around program and preview displays, which each having its own monitor. The program display is the main output feed, whereas the preview display is used for choosing and previewing the source that you want to go live next. Using the preview display is optional. However, the preview display is needed in the case of any visual effects. A modern video switcher has additional features such as DVE video effects, aux routing, and streaming capabilities.
